Berlin Art Week

Early September in Berlin was art week with a number of international art fairs and gallery openings, especially around the area Berlin Mitte. Known to Berliners as “Berliner Kunstherbst”. I found the area around Friedrichstrasse in the former eastern part of Berlin bursting with creativity and new galleries. When Berlin’s art fair, Art Forum, closed earlier this year, there was a need for a different kind of art scene and Berliner Kunstsalon, Preview Berlin, abc berlin contemporary and Berliner Liste are now a series of relatively new fairs all taking place from 7 to 11 September each year.

Abc took place in a former postal railway station where it started four years ago. Featuring 130 artists from 125 international galleries, this year’s fair focused on painting. The fair has grown and does attract some international artists, but it retains a very Berlin flavour.

Berliner Liste Fair showed more photography as well as contemporary art and predominantly local artists. Situated in a former power station it’s an atmospheric location. New galleries were showing works from central and eastern European countries.
